Sneaky Causes of Headaches

Waking up with a headache may not be a weird thing for you. Frustrating? Irritating? Sure. But, out of the ordinary? Maybe not. Headaches are actually the top complaint of pain for all adults. They come in, usually without notice, and then they hang around for as long as they like. The hard part about headaches is knowing the cause. There are so many causes for headaches, and many you probably already know about. Too much alcohol, an increase in stress, not enough sleep and skipping meals are common causes of headaches. But, what about the rest of them? Take a look at these 3 causes of headaches that may surprise you: Dehydration Most of us know that if we skip too many meals, headaches may soon follow. Similarly, however, not drinking enough water can cause significant headaches. When you don’t get enough H2O, your body gets dehydrated. This includes the brain, which thrives on water in order to function properly. Without it, the body inside and out draws in and shrivels slightly. This can cause a lot of negative symptoms, one of which is headaches. If you have headaches and don’t know the cause, check your water intake to see if that may be the culprit. Smelly Things Our sense of smell is a lot more sensitive than we think. Most of us can pick up traces of a smell a long way off, even if we don’t realize it. When we smell something really strong, it can cause a negative impact on the body including trouble breathing and headaches. For the most part, it is because the brain isn’t getting enough oxygen in those few seconds, and is instead bombarded with the smell. Different smells affect different people in different ways. For some, it could be a particular perfume or cologne. For others it could be something foul like pickles or sour milk. If you can figure out the smell that causes you pain, you may be able to avoid it, and therefore avoid those headaches. Subluxations in the Spine Sounds complicated, huh? It’s really not. Subluxations are simply misalignments of the vertebrae of the spine. The vertebrae can get out of line for various reasons, some noticeable and some not so much. It happens a lot more than we think, and most of the time, it goes a while without being detected. When it happens, however, it can bring a few unwanted symptoms like back pain, neck stiffness, and headaches. Treatment While the first 2 can be treated on your own by drinking more water and avoiding strong smells, the last one might take the help of a professional. A great way to fix subluxations of the spine is by seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis. Not only will this help to eliminate the current problems in the spine, but with continued care, it may also help to avoid further problems in the future.
